Penn Squash Courts | University of Pennsylvania | Philadelphia, PA

The university built the existing Penn Squash courts in 1959 with an addition in 1969. They housed ten international-sized courts for both intercollegiate teams and recreation users. The university sought an overall renovation of the building and limited expansion, including the addition of air conditioning and the ability to house more exhibition courts and circulation improvement. 

To accomplish the university’s goals, the project team carried out a comprehensive renovation, including renovated coach offices and team rooms and a new entrance to the existing complex. In addition, the project program consisted of increasing capacity to accommodate twelve international squash courts, two of which are permanent 4-wall glass exhibition courts with fixed seating. 

The structural scope of work included a complete analysis of the existing building and identification of structural elements requiring intervention and supplementation. Structural columns were relocated, and engineers provided new framing and foundations for the entrance addition. The project is pursuing LEED Silver certification.
